On April 3, 2023, the IDEA Network hosted an engaging CPD workshop during PCST2023 Online, focusing on the power of Wikipedia as the worldโ€™s largest encyclopedia, which garners 23 billion page views and 50 million edits each month. This session highlighted how participants can contribute to making Wikipedia a more inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible resource for global knowledge.

The workshop, led by IDEA Network co-founders Kirsty Ross and Abd Alsattar Ardati from the University of St Andrews, along with Sara Thomas from Wikimedia UK, offered a step-by-step guide on how to edit Wikipedia. It was designed to demystify the editing process and empower attendees to engage in public knowledge sharing. Participants were guided through creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding editing rules, and using tools for Wikipedia and related projects such as WikiData and WikiCommons.

Key objectives included:

  • Learning how to register and become a Wikipedia editor.
  • Identifying and addressing knowledge gaps within Wikipedia.
  • Understanding community rules and best practices for content addition.
  • Gaining hands-on experience with Wikipediaโ€™s editing tools.
  • Exploring ways to enhance the inclusivity and accessibility of open knowledge.

The workshop provided practical insights and real-world examples, helping attendees appreciate the impact of their contributions and how they can influence public engagement practices.
