We’re excited to share that the WikiConnect launch event was a wonderful success, thanks to the contributions of our speakers, Freddie Quek and Sara Thomas, and the engagement from all the attendees. Your passion for bridging the digital divide is what made this event truly special. We feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this journey with you. 🎉

Today, on #EndDigitalPovertyDay (12th September), the IDEA Network is proud to join the global movement to address digital poverty. Together with our amazing participants, we’re working to develop new skills that will help close the gaps in digital inclusion on Wikipedia. It’s a shared effort, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

Our Focus on Digital Inclusion:

We’re focusing our efforts around four key themes to guide our work:

  1. Access to Digital Infrastructure 🌐 – Tackling barriers to internet access, affordable devices, and reliable electricity.
  2. Digital Literacy and Skills Development 📖 – Promoting digital education and helping to bridge the skills gap, particularly in marginalized communities.
  3. Impact of Digital Exclusion on Society 🚫💼 – Examining how digital poverty affects employment, access to services, and social inclusion.
  4. Policy and Advocacy for Digital Inclusion 🏛️ – Highlighting the importance of policies and advocacy to advance digital inclusion worldwide.

🚀 What’s Next?

For those who couldn’t join us at the launch, we’re happy to announce a second intake! If you’re a student or university staff member, you can sign up now, and we’ll send you a recording of the launch event along with an invitation to our next intake in early October.

We’ll keep you updated on the skills our participants are developing and the impact they’re making in tackling digital poverty on Wikipedia.

The project is supported by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Fund, School of Computer Science, CS EDI Committee, and SACHI, and led by the IDEA Network.
